Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is the latest innovative therapy for many patients with Dry Eye Disease.

IPL targets 2 key components that contribute to Dry Eye relief:

  1. Inflammation - IPL reduces inflammation in the meibomian glands responsible for producing the oily layer of our tears. When these glands are inflamed, they are unable to produce enough oil to keep our tears from evaporating too rapidly.
  2. Blood vessels - IPL targets abnormal blood vessels on the surface of our eyes. These vessels promote inflammation that interferes with a healthy tear film, which causes symptoms of dryness and discomfort.

IPL is also an aesthetic treatment for skin conditions:

How Does IPL Work?

IPL is an effective light-based, non-invasive treatment that is performed on the skin below the eyes. It uses high-intensity light pulses to stimulate and rejuvenate the cells in and around the eyelids. The pulses liquefy and release oils that have hardened and clogged the meibomian glands in the eyelids. This effect not only improves the overall structure of our glands, it also improves the quality of our tears. This allows our oils to seamlessly secrete from the glands, thereby lubricating our eyes naturally and rebuilding our system to function properly on its own.

The IPL Treatment

IPL is an in-office procedure that typically takes 4 sessions for optimal results depending on severity. The sessions are set ~3-4 weeks apart. Each session takes about 15 minutes. After the session, you can resume your day as usual.

Some may see results in as little as 3 weeks- but the exact time will differ from patient to patient, depending on various factors.
